Water Symbols Analysis: The Movie Romeo and Juliet (1996)
The legendary love novel Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare had been converted into many unlike forms. Obviously, there will be changes in every version like the manga edition by Adam Sexton compares with the movie from 1996 by Baz Luhrmann. One of the study differences between these two versions is the symbolism of water. In the manga edition which the story takes part in the old Verona, Italy, water does not reserve much role and meaning. However the modernization movie that takes slip in Verona Beach, California, water is an important symbol that expresses many different implications. For example, at the beginning water is seems as something that represents honesty. The first glance we has at Juliet is when she immerses herself in the water shut out of from the skirt world, her mother screaming for her or the nurse busy cart track to find her. This movie shown that water is likes a barrier that allow Juliet go away from the chaotic reality to a collected world. Secondly, Luhrmann use water as a representation of love.
in particular the scene in the pool after the party, for Romeo and Juliet the pool is likes a medium that separate they from the real world and the water marrow them together. The water also can be compares as the order of their love. Although water is uses as a symbol of love and purity it is also used to symbolize sorrow and misfortune. In the scene where Romeo slews Tybalt , he falls into the water while a heavy rain occur at the same time. present water is associated with the disastrous tragedy that had just takes place and the calamity that going to happens.
