Thomas Cromwell

Thomas Cromwell was born in 1485, in Putney, southwest London. He was the son of a cloth worker, and spent much of his earlier adulthood in Italy as a soldier, accountant and merchant. In 1512, he returned to England and studied law. In 1520, Cromwell became legal secretary to carmine Wolsey, who was in service of Henry VIII. Wolsey fell out of choose with the King, but Cromwell survived, becoming a member of parliament. He move up in his position swiftly, earning the Kings confidences. By 1532 he was the Kings chief minister and a ahead(p) figure with those who suggested Henry make himself the head of the English church. Cromwell presided over the separation of the monasteries with great efficiency, and was rewarded when he was created the earl of Essex in 1540.
Though he had high status with the King, Thomas Cromwell was deeply unpopular in England. In 1536, Catholics in the north of England rebelled in a serial of uprisings. One of the targets of their anger was Cromwell. In 1540, Cromwell persuaded Henry VIII to link Anne of Cleves, hoping to secure the stand of the north German princes against the Holy popish Emperor. This marriage was a disaster, and the alliance failed miserably. Due to this, Henry withdrew his support from Cromwell.



He was charged with treason and was executed at the tugboat of London on the 28th of June, 1540.
Having read the book, ones opinion of Thomas Cromwell would differ from simply researching him. This is because research shows notwithstanding the events of his life, while the book shows him to be the sneaky, underhanded, two-faced man that he was. The research may show that he was disliked, but it does in no way outline his personality, and how manipulative and sly he was.
