Langston Hughes was born on Februay 1,1902 in Joplin Missouri.
He was named James after his cause his mothers name was carrie.

He went to public school in Kansas and Illinoise and upon graduating elementary shcool he was named class poet although he had never write a poem. That title sparked an interest writing song.
