Three day road is an interesting tale about two native Australian men, (Cree to be specific) and their voyages during the Great War or World warfare one. written by partly Native/Canadian impudentist Joseph Boyden, Three day road is a story that truly tries to give discernment as to how it mustve felt being a distich of native soldiers in an otherwise primarily Caucasian Canadian army. The story follows the two main characters; Xavier Bird and Elijah Weesageechak from enlistment until they get to back home from the war. The whole novel properly encompasses the proofreader with the trials and tribulations that natives faced during this point in history, both at war and at home. I think the topic of cultural expectations is sinless for this novel because it is blatantly discussed about on numerous cause throughout the novel.
The story deals with the idea of the cultural dissimilarity in the midst of White Canadians (Wemistikoshiw) and the Cree characters. To be specific it deals with the concept of assimilation and how virtually characters reject it and others accept it. Take Elijahs character for example, he is quite elated when his fellow Caucasian soldiers give him an incline alternative (WhiskeyJack) to his original Cree name.
After Xavier gets word of this he concludes, Whiskeyjack is how they cite his name, make it their own...what sounds to my ears like a longer word for bastard, reservation his name a name without a family (Boyden 145). Xavier is somewhat dissatisfy with Elijah for his keen interest in the Wemistikoshiw culture and lack of surcharge in his own name. The book accurately conveys the idea of how native soldiers were looked at during this time, as lesser. The reader automatically assumes this from the beginning of the novel all the way through to the end. While at a bar, Elijah has a conversation with a native corporal about his own impressive kill streak.
