The Wars of the Roses were fought on and off for thirty socio-economic classs amongst 1455 and 1485, and were a series of courtly wars between two come to branches of the House of Plantagenet: the houses of Lancaster (the red rose) and York (and white rose). On 4th March 1461, Henry was deposed and captive by his cousin Edward of York, who became Edward IV. Henry slipped back into madness. Meanwhile Edward believed that he had recaptured the throne permanently for his family. When Henry Bolingbroke had deposed Richard II more than lx years earlier, many critics had accused Henry (a Lancastrian) of having a genuinely weak claim on the throne.
