Witches: friendly Hysteria or Justified Persecution?
Salem Massachusetts was the order of a horrible tragedy which will be remembered for the sopor of time. The time check was already stressful enough with badly harvests, ravaging diseases, and well-disposed unrest. This guide to a small township of barely 500 pack being thrust into social turmoil. Seventeenth-century New Englanders seed that people sometimes covenanted with Satan to acquire the powers of witchery. That this arrogance was nearly universal in Massachusetts made it no different from other European societies, where witches had been prosecuted, tortured, and executed with some rule since at least the 11th century. (Kidd 1) But what caused this apalling trial? As we sit back and examine it now, the main debate is whether the trials and frenzy were a result of individual actions or social beliefs. record would suggest that as one supposed moment of witchcraft was found, it was exaggerated and expanded upon. Because of this, I am inclined to believe that the main cause of this whole catastrophe was social belief. Chances are, if you wheel spoke in favor of those on trial than you would soon pay back yourself on that stand being interrogated.
Being a follower and not a leader led to the death and persecution of numerous innocent people. Evidently the Salem Trials are still something we go through uncomfortable about. We want to think that we would not be extradite the mode people behaved then, we would behave better, we would not be fooled by a batch of bad bread. (Morgan 1) Morgan is expressing his belief that the people of that time period made a big mistake and should not have just fallen in line with the rest of the people of Salem. Failure to think for oneself was just one of the many reasons that led to the trials.
