From June through September 1692, nineteen men and women were taken for hanging to Gallows Hill, a barren sky near the colonisation of Salem, Massachusetts. All the history books vaguely describe the events, but under further scrutiny, we can learn that this tragedy was not inevitable, merely an unfortunate combination of an ongoing frontier war, unhealthy sanitary, unforesightful economic conditions, religious strife, teenage boreom, and personal jealousies. It begins with the commissioning of Samuel Parris, a Harvard graduate and a somewhat successful planter from Barbados who became bored with farming and began substituting as a minister.

He was invited by John Putnam, an influential Salem resident, to preach in the settlement church.
